AGI stands for artificial general intelligence. In simple terms, it means an AI system that can do a wide range of intellectual work at or above human level, instead of being good at just one specific task. In a new TIME report, the OpenAI CEO said the company is “not quite yet” there, but expects to have an internal system by the end of the year that he would call AGI. That does not mean a public ChatGPT update suddenly replaces every human worker overnight. It means OpenAI believes its internal systems are getting close to a much more general kind of intelligence.
