“My entire city was going through a water shortage. But when I was visiting these golf courses, the sprinklers were on like the whole day,” says Rafael Manuel, director of ‘Filipiñana.’ “Something as basic as water then gets imbued with violence—that it’s accessible to some and not to most.”
Opening in LA on September 4, ‘Filipiñana’ is Manuel’s debut feature film, a black comedy drama that explores structural inequalities in Filipino society, captured through one fateful day at a luxurious Manila country club. Winner of the Special Jury Award for Creative Vision at sundanceorg, Manuel employs a distinct style that combines stunning cinematography with patient pacing.
