Bosnian Serb general Ratko Mladic has died aged 84 in the United Nations detention center in The Hague.⁣ ⁣ Mladic, who had suffered several strokes in recent months, was serving a life sentence for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity after overseeing the Srebrenica slaughter, Europe's worst act of bloodshed since World War II.⁣ ⁣ Serbian state officials and Mladic's family had appealed for his release due to his failing health, but those calls were rejected by the Hague tribunal.⁣ ⁣ The son of a WWII partisan fighter killed in 1945, Mladic was an officer in the old Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) when Yugoslavia’s disintegration began in 1991.⁣ ⁣ In 1992, Mladic was picked to command the new Bosnian Serb army during the war in Bosnia.⁣ ⁣ Mladic was convicted of genocide for orchestrating the 1995 massacre of up to 8,000 Muslims in Srebrenica. ⁣ ⁣ #mladic #serbia
