💫 BSO gives a rarely-heard performance of Polish-Jewish composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg's Trumpet Concerto with Principal Trumpet @andrew.balio this week on June 6, 8, and 9. 🎺 Under the baton of Music Director Jonathon Heyward, the concerts present a vignette of Shostakovich and his protégé Weinberg's close bond through the era of Soviet oppression in the mid twentieth century. 🎶 It was upon Shostakovich's invitation 💌 that Weinberg moved to Moscow in 1943 from Uzbekistan, where he was living after his mother and sister were murdered during the Nazi invasion of USSR. He was imprisoned in 1953 due to Stalin's anti-Semitic campaigns, and Shostakovich himself wrote 🖋️ to the feared head of the KGB for the release of Weinberg, ultimately succeeding. The Trumpet Concerto was written in 1967, and some say that it was written in a similar tone as Shostakovich's own unrealized composition for trumpet and orchestra that he attempted in his 20s.
