After a scoreless 87 minutes, Pierre Littbarski (who had come on for Uwe Bein at halftime) appeared to have won it for West Germany with a powerful left-footed strike into the top corner. However, in stoppage time, Colombia produced one of the tournament's most memorable sequences. Carlos Valderrama threaded a trademark through-ball to Freddy Rincón, who slotted the ball through the legs of Bodo Illgner to equalise. The point was enough to send Colombia through to the knockout stages for the first time in their history, while West Germany proceeded as group winners on their way to winning the trophy.
