21 YEARS LATER: REMEMBERING HURRICANE KATRINA NEW ORLEANS - Twenty-one years ago today, Hurricane Katrina forever changed New Orleans and communities across the Gulf Coast. Today, August 29, marks the 21st anniversary of the disaster. At the Katrina Memorial on Canal Street, nearly 100 unclaimed or unidentified victims of Hurricane Katrina are interred, a permanent resting place and reminder of the lives lost. A wreath-laying ceremony was scheduled at the memorial earlier this morning, with New Orleans Mayor Helena Moreno, City Council President J.P. Morrell, other elected officials and community leaders expected to participate. The ceremony was sponsored by the Crescent City Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association and co-sponsored by the Katrina Memorial Foundation and the City of New Orleans.
