- The temperature is cooling down, the mornings are slowly getting lighter later, evenings are getting darker earlier and the wind is getting colder. Summer is over and there is a distinctly Autumnal feel about the place - but what a fabulous summer we had here - plenty of days when temperatures exceeded 28-30 degC and bright sunshine. Having lived in the Far East I never tire of hot weather. From many conversations with Witneyites I seemed to be the only person enjoying the heatwave. Brits are an odd race - if it's hot they moan and want it cold, when it is cold they want it hot. When it rains they want it dry.......and when we get just 1mm of snow the entire country grinds to a halt. Meanwhile in Switzerland in winter the roads are black ribbons winding their way through a snowy paradise, and Swiss trains run through snow so deep you can't see the track and still arrive on time and connect with the buses, lake steamers and mountain cog railways.
