She didn't always know she wanted to become a doctor. Growing up in Shimla, Dr. Gita Prakash remembers a carefree childhood spent watching clouds, counting stars and making daisy chains. Then one experience changed everything. A childhood friend with a hole in her heart was taken abroad for surgery after her family made enormous sacrifices. When she returned, she was healthy, energetic and playing with the other children again. For young Gita, it felt nothing short of a miracle.
