Has the "people's slam" become too expensive for the people? 🤔
The U.S. Open's longtime reputation as the "people's slam" is increasingly colliding with rising ticket prices driven by overwhelming demand.
According to The Guardian, the tournament has evolved beyond a tennis event into a nearly three-week cultural festival in New York, helping it surpass 1M attendees in 2024.
That popularity has made attending significantly more expensive, especially on the secondary market. A grounds pass with a face value of $65 was listed for as much as $321 during the tournament.
USTA CEO Craig Tiley called the demand a "nice problem," though he acknowledged limits to future attendance growth.
