This summer, Mark John ’27 participated in the University at Buffalo Eric Pitman Summer Program for Computational Science, a workshop in which he studied and analyzed mathematical and computational models and simulations related to type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The culmination of the program saw John and Abhi Ayodhya of Boston make a presentation entitled “Pump Malfunctions and Optimization.” They discussed the optimization of data related to type 1 and type 2 diabetes, as well as an overview of current insulin-producing medical devices such as insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. The bulk of the data and information in the presentation was derived from the UB Medical Center in the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.  John’s participation in the program was recommended to him by CHS science teacher Scott Walters.
