What do beavers have to do with increased wildfire risk? More than you'd think! A decrease in beaver populations means fewer beaver dams, and fewer beaver dams means water rips through the landscape faster, eroding banks, deepening channels, and drying out the land. Beaver dam analogs are man-made structures that slow the water down, reconnect streams to floodplains, and let water soak into the landscape like a wet sponge, squeezing it back into the stream during the hottest summer months. Alongside partners like the USFS, TU has worked to build BDAs across landscapes all over the country, reducing wildfire severity and helping mitigate drought conditions, alongside creating more habitat for trout and other wildlife.
