PTSD doesn’t just affect how you feel—it can change how your brain functions.
Brain SPECT imaging measures blood flow and activity, showing areas of healthy activity, too little activity, or too much activity.
In a healthy active brain scan, the cerebellum is typically the most active region. In PTSD, we often see increased activity in the deep limbic system, basal ganglia, and anterior cingulate gyrus—sometimes creating a distinctive “diamond pattern.” These areas are involved in emotion, anxiety, attention, and getting “stuck” on thoughts.
PTSD is more than a collection of symptoms. Understanding how the brain is functioning can be an important part of a comprehensive evaluation and personalized treatment plan.
