Australia’s official music charts will no longer count wholly AI-generated songs. ARIA, the body behind the ARIA Charts, now requires a release to be “substantially human made” to chart. Humans must have written the song and performed the lead vocal and primary instruments. AI can still be used in a supporting role, including tools like mastering, drum machines, and Auto-Tune. Fully AI-generated tracks are out, including from the ARIA Awards. The change followed backlash over an AI-assisted cover of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer” by Australian DJ Josh Fawaz, which climbed the charts and later added generative AI credits after criticism. This is not a ban on AI in music. It is a line between assistance and a song that is mostly made by a model. ARIA can also remove tracks later if they are found ineligible.
