A designer made clothing specifically to outsmart AI surveillance cameras. Berlin-based artist Simon Weckert created Digital Camouflage, a loud patterned shirt that looks like a Hawaiian print to humans and like nothing at all to some AI detectors. Look at the footage. Everyone around him gets a green “PERSON” box. He often doesn’t. The trick is not invisibility. It is an adversarial pattern. AI never learned what a human is. It learned what humans statistically look like in millions of training images. The saturated colors hit the model’s early layers, and the overlapping shapes break the body’s outline, so the detector struggles to bind head, torso, and limbs into one figure. Weckert built the pattern in an adversarial loop against detection models, then tested it in public, including around Berlin’s Kottbusser Tor, where AI video surveillance is being rolled out.
