North Carolina health officials confirmed a teen infected with Naegleria fowleri, also known as a brain-eating amoeba, has died. NCDHHS first shared news of the infection in a news release last week, reporting that a teen from central North Carolina had become “critically ill” and was receiving medical care. A DHHS representative later confirmed the patient had died on Monday.
