After a historic storm knocked out power across Northwest Indiana, NIPSCO began releasing restoration timelines for communities across the region.
Gary, a majority-Black city with one of the largest geographic footprints in the area, wasn’t included.
Some residents spent nearly two weeks without power before service was restored. Mayor Eddie Melton says that initial omission only deepened the feeling that Gary was being forgotten.
So we have to ask: Was Gary being left out simply an oversight, or was something deeper at play?
