Red Moon over Louisiana On the night of Aug. 27-28, the full moon slipped through Earth's shadow, creating a near-total lunar eclipse for skywatchers in the Americas. (Viewers in Europe and Africa were able to catch a partial lunar eclipse, as well.) Because the remaining light is largely filtered through Earth's atmosphere, which scatters shorter frequencies like violets and blues, the light that reaches the Moon can take on a reddish tone. These images were taken by NASA photographers at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Louisiana.
