Earth’s total solar eclipses are possible because of an extraordinary cosmic coincidence. The Sun is about 400 times wider than the Moon, but it is also about 400 times farther from Earth, making both appear almost exactly the same size in our sky. Mars has no such perfect alignment. Its moon Phobos is much smaller in the sky and can only partially cover the Sun, creating a tiny, fast moving eclipse that lasts less than a minute.
