When Apple introduced its M1 chip, its custom GPU came with no public hardware documentation, making it extremely difficult for Linux developers to support. Alyssa Rosenzweig helped reverse engineer the GPU by experimenting with its behavior, figuring out its shader architecture and command structures, and then building an open source graphics driver for Mesa, Linux’s graphics stack. Within weeks, she had the M1 rendering its first triangle. Her work eventually helped produce a fully open source driver that passed official OpenGL ES 3.1 conformance tests and later achieved OpenGL 4.6 and OpenGL ES 3.2 conformance, despite Apple’s hardware documentation remaining unavailable.
