One person’s opinion could have changed the direction of my life if I had allowed myself to believe it.
When you are young, starting again, or already feel as though the odds are against you, somebody telling you that a dream is “not for people like you” can carry a lot of weight.
I was fortunate that, on this occasion, I kept going.
But I often think about how many talented young people gradually lower their expectations because of what they hear around them, what opportunities they can see, or what they have been taught to believe is realistic for somebody from their background.
Your circumstances matter. Inequality is real. The path will not always be fair.
But somebody else’s idea of what is possible for you does not have to become your own.
Keep knocking on doors. Some will stay closed. You only need the right ones to open.
