The Real Numbers For COVID 5th Years When COVID hit, all athletes were given a 5th year of eligibility, marking the first time a blanket fifth year became a thing. As of this summer, all Division I and II athletes will be given a 5th year, and DIII is expected to vote on it sometime this academic year. While it felt like everybody took their COVID 5th year, the numbers are actually much lower, with only 27% of athletes utilizing it. While the circumstances are very different, this implies that the number of players on current rosters that will utilize a 5th year may be much smaller than anticipated.
