The Athletics Integrity Unit has banned 🇪🇹 Tiruye Mesfin for three years after she admitted to an anti-doping rule violation stemming from abnormalities in her Athlete Biological Passport. The AIU looked at 17 blood samples collected between Dec. 2, 2022 and Nov. 28, 2025, and built a longitudinal profile that an independent Expert Panel unanimously flagged as likely doping. The abnormality showed up in samples 13 through 16, taken between late June and late August 2025. From the AIU’s report: The panel identified a “stimulation/suppression” pattern: elevated hemoglobin combined with the lowest reticulocyte value across all 17 of her samples. Their conclusion was that the pattern was highly likely to be caused by a supraphysiological increase in red cell mass, consistent with the use and then discontinuation of an EPO-type agent or a recent blood transfusion.
