When the President of Ghana speaks about diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and heart disease, we should all pay attention.
During his “Resetting Ghana” regional tour this year, President John Dramani Mahama warned about the growing impact of lifestyle diseases and challenged citizens to rethink some of our modern habits.
He spoke about the “sweet tooth” culture; how excessive sugar consumption has become a major health concern and shared his concerns after visiting a cancer centre in Sweden, where he learnt about the relationship between glucose metabolism and cancer cells.
He also addressed a common habit many of us can relate to: coming home late and eating very large portions of heavy carbohydrate-based meals before bed.
His point was that late-night eating, especially large portions of carbohydrate-heavy meals, may contribute to excess energy storage and weight gain because people are less active after eating and the body has fewer immediate opportunities to use that energy...
