While on patrol overnight, Castlemaine police came across a kangaroo that had sadly been struck and killed by a vehicle.
As members passed the animal, they noticed something moving.
Inside its mother’s pouch was a young joey that had survived.
The joey was carefully wrapped in a jumper to keep warm and safe while members contacted local wildlife carers. For a short time, the tiny marsupial became Castlemaine Police Station’s smallest recruit before being transferred into the care of wildlife experts.
Police are often called to assist in unexpected situations, and this was a reminder that sometimes those in need of help come in all shapes and sizes.
