Puerto Rican music has had an undeniable impact on the global music industry, but DJ Guari says there’s still another part of the Latin music scene that hasn’t gotten the same recognition: the DJs. I caught up with Guari, co-founder of the Mundo movement, at 9AM Banger’s Rise & Rosé in El Barrio to talk about the sounds shaping his sets, the difference between Nuyorican and island Puerto Rican music culture, and why community remains at the center of what he’s building. Mundo began with Guari and Dos Flacos throwing a party in a Bronx bodega because, as he puts it, they wanted to create something for their people uptown. Since then, the movement has grown, while Guari has continued experimenting with what Latin electronic music can sound like. “Pop music has accepted DJs as pop artists.
