September 2nd is Spalding Baseball Day! This day honors the legacy of Albert Goodwill Spalding who was born on this day in 1850. Spalding was a pioneer in the early days of baseball and while he was at one point a pitcher, manager, and executive, he is more known today as the co-founder of the Spalding sporting goods company. For today, Jared letterpress printed the oldest baseball related item in our print shop exhibit. This electrotype (copy of woodcut) depicts a hand holding a baseball. It was made about 125-135 years ago and it is from the Lewis Winter Collection. The text below, “Spalding baseball day” was typeset in 30 point Caslon font.
