The Fairmont Copley Plaza is officially a City of Boston Landmark, recognizing one of Back Bay’s most recognizable buildings for its architecture, history and role in the development of Copley Square. The hotel opened in 1912 and was designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, the same architect behind New York City’s Plaza Hotel. Its landmark designation protects not only the Italian Renaissance Revival exterior, but significant interior features including the Grand Ballroom, Oval Room, Peacock Alley and historic mosaic flooring. Over more than a century, the hotel has welcomed U.S. presidents, artists and entertainers while hosting generations of Boston weddings, proms, receptions and other celebrations. Fun detail: the effort to have it recognized as a landmark can be traced all the way back to a 1989 petition signed by 10 Boston voters.
