In Focus: Georg Baselitz, ‘Die linke Hand von Rousseau’, 2019 at Frieze Seoul (Booth A20) ✨⁠ ⁠ ‘Die linke Hand von Rousseau’ derives from a series of seven gilt-bronze reliefs conceived in 2019 by Georg Baselitz (1938–2026), marking the artist’s return to sculpture after a six-year hiatus.⁠ ⁠ Baselitz’s gilded hands function in a way that borrows from both sculpture and picture – while he asserted that they were neither. ‘It is like a coat of arms, an emblem’, Baselitz stated, ‘it is also a declaration, a declaration of nothing. A zero declaration’.⁠ ⁠ The artist compared his bronze reliefs to the stencilling of hands seen in prehistoric cave paintings, to ex-votos in the shape of hands in prayer and to fingerprints in passports.
