16 Years of North Coast. Chicago’s Last Stand of Summer. Swipe through these posters and you’re basically looking at a time capsule of the last 16 years of music in Chicago. In September 2010, a new locally produced festival called North Coast Music Festival took over Union Park for Labor Day weekend and called itself “Summer’s Last Stand.” That first lineup was ridiculous: The Chemical Brothers, Nas & Damian Marley, Moby, De La Soul, Lupe Fiasco, Pretty Lights, Benny Benassi, Paul van Dyk, Flying Lotus, Green Velvet, Boys Noize, Phantogram and more. And somehow, that was only the beginning. Look closely through the old posters and you start realizing just how many different eras of music passed through North Coast. But what made North Coast special was that it never really fit into one box. Electronic music could sit next to hip-hop. Jam bands next to house.
