Volunteers pulled 900 pounds of trash out of Oak Creek Canyon in three hours. Forty-four pounds of it was dog feces, human waste and used diapers. The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality is warning that what people leave behind at popular swimming spots can make other families sick. Erin Jordan with ADEQ said trash in Arizona waterways is a big problem generally, and that E. coli is their major concern. If people ingest that water, it can cause stomach issues. This isn’t isolated to Sedona either. Volunteers who clean the Salt River told Arizona’s Family earlier this year that they filled nearly five gallons of toilet paper and human waste during one cleanup. Michelle Jacob, who’s been doing those cleanups for years, said it was the first time she’d wanted to sanitize everything she touched, and that they’re good for at least one diaper or more every time they come out.
