OPENAI SAYS AI IS NOW ACCELERATING AI RESEARCH ITSELF
OpenAI just published one of the more consequential looks yet at what is happening inside a frontier AI lab.
The company says it has reached its September 2026 goal of creating an “automated research intern,” capable of completing well defined research tasks that could take a skilled human researcher several days.
The next target:
An automated AI researcher by March 2028.
Inside OpenAI, researchers are already using approximately 3.1 agent workdays for every human workday.
Agents are writing code, troubleshooting infrastructure, analyzing experiments and taking on increasingly complex research tasks.
And this is where the story gets much bigger.
OpenAI is explicitly tracking progress toward recursive self improvement, where increasingly capable AI systems help humans build even more capable AI systems.
We are not at an autonomous intelligence explosion.
Not yet.
Humans still choose research directions, evaluate results an...
