We’re heartbroken to share that red wolf 2503F, also known as Amelia, has been killed in a vehicle strike in eastern North Carolina.    Amelia was the bold, adventurous matriarch of the Milltail Pack. After her mother, Hope, began slowing down with age, Amelia took over the pack and carried on her family’s legacy. She raised a litter of eight pups in 2025 and welcomed a second litter just this year with her mate, Finch (2191M). Two of those pups have survived their first few months in the wild.    Amelia was helping secure the future of the most endangered canine on Earth. Hundreds of thousands of red wolves once roamed Eastern North America. Today, only a single wild population remains: the 21 adult individuals in North Carolina’s Albemarle Peninsula. Red wolves urgently need additional populations to ensure their survival.    Vehicle strikes are now the leading cause of death for wild red wolves.
