“I am here. I exist. My presence matters.” ✨ At Rencontres d’Arles 2026, photographer Carolina Arantes @c_arantes presents First Generation, a deeply moving project created together with more than forty first-generation French women of African descent. At its heart, this work is about identity and belonging. What happens when you are considered too French in one place and not French enough in another? How do you navigate a life between cultures, histories, languages, and expectations? Through intimate portraits and personal testimonies, First Generation gives voice to women whose individual journeys reflect broader questions of migration, representation, family legacy, and self-definition. What makes this project so powerful is its humanity.
