Well it turns out you can’t float across a river in a napkin boat (knife to a gun fight might be a better analogy, but 🤷🏼‍♀️I like the napkin boat)... I knew coming into this that I wasn’t race fit, and didn't have any massive expectations of myself today... but was hopeful that maybe I’d surprise myself by being able to fight through it better than any of my training had given me reason to believe. Instead I ended up with what I would consider to be the worst case scenario performance wise. The napkin boat sank. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ My "job" was to stay near the front through the first 10 miles which had a number of twisty roads and a few 90 degree turns, which I did... but after that, I was told I could take it easy, just sit in the peloton and get ready to grind it out over Mt. Gaylor... unfortunately for me it didn’t ever really feel easy, and as soon as any sort of surge was put on the pace I couldn’t follow.
