Happy National Hummingbird Day! As we have reached the first Saturday of September, we have also reached the annual celebration of our beloved Hummingbirds! Hummingbirds are widely regarded as the world’s smallest birds and, accordingly, belong to the family Trochilidae, coming from Greek and Latin roots meaning “small bird”. The Hummingbird name comes as a result of the well-known humming sound that echoes off their beating wings, as they are also known for their rapid wing flapping. With their rapid flapping, they generally hover and hum mid-air as their array of colours linger in our line of sight. With nearly 360-375 recognized species, Hummingbirds occur throughout North and South America, with a wider variation of species inhabiting the southern, more tropical regions.
