Creative lighting is what endlessly fuels my work, and any time a new tool promises more creative control I have to get my hands on it! In this video, I experiment with the Profoto Softbox Mask, a specialty tool that swaps out the traditional diffusion on a softbox to create a black void/mask behind your subject. This allows the light to wrap around the edges for a dramatic rim light effect. While traditionally used for product photography, in this shoot I create a futuristic fashion look. Throughout the behind the scenes I'll walk you through the full setup of this bold, graphic fashion shot built with just two strobes. You'll see how I place a Profoto 5-foot Octa with the Softbox Mask directly behind my subject to create that circle of rim light, then bring in a bare strobe with a saturated blue gel as my main light for hard light and specular highlights.
