A Toyota Yaris just confused an AI surveillance camera using nothing but a specially designed pattern 🚗👀 donutmedia teamed up with cybersecurity researcher Bill Swearingen to test whether a normal car could be made harder for AI cameras to recognize. They covered a 2009 Toyota Yaris in an adversarial pattern from Swearingen’s noRecognition project and tested it against a Flock camera at Def Con in Las Vegas. The camera could still see the car. What changed was the AI system trying to decide what it was looking at. During the test, the pattern disrupted the object-detection software enough that the vehicle wasn’t classified normally. Swearingen says the design was developed through millions of computer-vision tests, although results can vary depending on lighting, camera angle, hardware, and the detection model being used.
