There’s a version of entrepreneurship we love to celebrate. The founder who keeps going. The founder who refuses to quit. The founder who finds one more pivot. But sometimes, continuing isn’t courage. Sometimes courage is admitting that the thing you built is no longer the thing you’re meant to carry. I remember hearing all of it: “Push through.” “Founders never give up.” “You’re so close.” “Just pivot.” But I knew the truth. And one day, sitting in a coffee shop, I made the phone call and dissolved the company. At the time, walking away felt like the opposite of what a founder was supposed to do. Now I understand it differently. Bravery isn’t always breaking through. Sometimes bravery is walking away. And sometimes the decision that looks most like quitting from the outside is the decision that finally gives you permission to become who you’re supposed to be next.
