The US Supreme Court this week issued a ruling that will make it easier for employers to sue their employees’ unions for damages if they believe that workers’ activism hurt the company’s business. The Court’s decision came in Glacier Northwest v. International Brotherhood of Teamsters Local 174, and in an 8-1 decision, the justices ruled that the concrete company could indeed sue the union after striking employees walked out and left concrete running in trucks. This forced the company’s non-union workers to dispose of the concrete before it hardened and damaged the trucks. The decision, which comes as strikes are at a 15-year high, deals a huge blow to organized labor and could make it riskier for workers to go on strike by exposing their unions to damages claims that result from labor actions. Only Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson dissented, in an opinion that argued for keeping long-standing protections for unions that have existed since the late 1950s. . . . . . #virginia #virginianews...
