TRANSPARENCY POST: I’ve lived with trichotillomania (a mental health condition tied to OCD that causes me to pull out my own hair when I’m stressed, anxious, or even just bored) since I was in 3rd grade.
At that age, I didn’t have a name for it. I just knew I couldn’t stop pulling out my eyebrows and that it felt so good when I did.
My family assumed it was a bad habit, something I could quit if I just tried harder. My friends assumed it was something only white people did. But if you’ve ever lived with trichotillomania, you know it’s more complicated than that and it doesn’t discriminate. It affects people from every race and background.
I didn’t even learn the name of my disorder until college. One day, my boyfriend asked me why I kept pulling out my eyelashes while watching TV and I hadn’t even realized I was doing it. I Googled it later that day and finally learned it was called trichotillomania.
