This #MuseumMonday, we are highlighting the Richmond Cottage Dining Room, one of the oldest rooms of the home, built in 1896. This year marks 130 years since its construction. The space originally served as the ground‑floor living area for Samuel and Edith Richmond, whose pioneer-era home was among the first in the town of Cutler and built from native Florida slash pine. In 1900, the Richmond family enlarged their home, adding more rooms on the east side of the building, facing Biscayne Bay. Upon enlarging the cottage, the family established the Richmond Inn, which became the only hotel operating between Coconut Grove and Key West at the time of its opening. The first floor of the original living space then became the hotel dining room. After Charles Deering purchased and renovated the property in 1916 as his winter home, the room remained the estate’s primary dining area, even after the adjacent Stone House was completed in 1922.
