The city got its haunting name during the spring of 1221 AD. Genghis Khan besieged the citadel to avenge the death of his beloved grandson, Mutukhan. The ensuing massacre was so horrific and loud that the cries of the doomed inhabitants echoed across the entire valley, leading locals to name it the “City of Screams” (Shahr-e Gholghola). TBuilt originally in the 6th century during the Sassanian and Ghurid periods, the citadel served as a vital, fortified heart of ancient Bamyan along the Silk Road.
