Portlander Jacob Hoopes recently began a 30-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to throwing a rock at a federal officer during a heated protest outside Portland’s ICE facility last summer.
The case played out amid a year of turmoil between the Trump administration and those critical of its actions, specifically its aggressive immigration enforcement tactics.
Though the government has cracked down on protesters across the country, Hoopes is among the few Portlanders to face prison time for their actions at a local ICE protest. His story is unique in other ways, too, including because of the strong network of support he has to help him through the next two and a half years, and beyond.
