Taiwanese opera, live at TCCF 2026! Founded by veteran troupe leader Wu Guang-Hong in Taichung, Shin Yi Fang has built a reputation for productions that honour the traditional style of Taiwanese opera while pushing it forward through innovation, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and international exchange. At TCCF 2026, they’re performing “Xue Dingshan and Fan Lihua,” a classic from the traditional repertoire. The story follows a fateful encounter at Hanjang Pass between a young general and the formidable female warrior Fan Lihua, who repeatedly outwits him with agility and wit. What unfolds is a fast-paced exchange of stylized combat choreography between the xiaosheng and xiaodan roles, a hallmark of Taiwanese opera that showcases both technical mastery and theatrical intensity.
