When I’m anxious, overwhelmed, grieving, or spending way too much time in my head, this is one of the simplest ways I know to come back into my body. I actually have a reminder on my phone to stop and do this several times a day. The practice is designed to help bring your heart and brain into greater coherence, so instead of your nervous system staying stuck in stress mode, you’re creating a few moments of calm and safety in your body. And that matters. Because when we’re stressed or anxious, our attention tends to move up into our heads. We start thinking, anticipating, worrying, replaying. Grief can do this too. Sometimes we’re physically in one place while our mind and nervous system are somewhere else entirely. This takes about 30–45 seconds.
