REFLECTION: I didn’t find BMX, BMX found me. I’ve always been a self motivated seeker and I started riding bikes like doing tricks on my own. I went from doing wheelies on the street and jumping curbs to actually building a quarterpipe. I actually learned how to do baby airs on a big grass dirt ditch before an actual wooden quaterpipe though. I learned by myself because I had seen dudes in a BMX ACTION magazine doing airs at a skatepark and I was like what is ALL of this? I was born in the Midwest so we didn’t have any skateparks that I knew of? This was back in 1982. So I went riding around town trying to find something that resembled a transition, I found a big ditch. It was like a grass under vert mini ramp 😜 so I went for it. I had no idea what I was doing but just tried. Shortly after I ordered ramp plans and built my own quarterpipe with my dad in the backyard and learned how to ride that ramp by myself.
