Your Muscles Become More Resistant to Protein as You Age Research suggests older adults can build ~40% less new muscle protein from the same protein stimulus as younger adults. This is called anabolic resistance. And the interesting part is that it doesn’t seem to be caused by one thing. Aging affects several systems simultaneously—including how amino acids reach the muscle and how strongly muscle responds to leucine and mTOR signaling. So the answer isn’t simply: “Eat more protein.” Or: “Take more leucine.” There’s a smarter way to approach it.
