Calling the man positioned to become the first Black Speaker of the House a "monkey." There's no version of that that isn't racist.
Rula Jebreal used the slur during a podcast critiquing Hakeem Jeffries' support for AIPAC. The Congressional Black Caucus fired back immediately, saying the term has no non-racist use no matter the political point behind it. Jeffries' own brother called the comments exactly what they were.
Jebreal has since apologized for her word choice while standing by her criticism of Jeffries. Many aren't accepting it.
This is sparking a bigger conversation about anti-Black racism showing up across the political spectrum, not just from one side.
