“We did not feel like we were going to make it out of that room alive.” That’s how a UNC student described a Black student organization watch party that turned terrifying when a man allegedly walked in, hurled racial slurs, and reached for what students believed was a weapon. It turned out to be a possible fire starting device. Students fled the building in fear while the man stayed outside. UNC never issued a campus wide alert. Students are now asking how he got into a building they say was locked, and demanding real answers about their safety. “He will not win,” BSM President Makhi Nash said.
