A 7.5-foot-tall bronze statue of Jimmy Buffett by sculptor Ben Victor was unveiled Sept. 10, 2026. It overlooks the Mobile waterfront outside the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf. Victor told onlookers that when he was working in clay, he played the recording of the 2010 show that Buffett performed on the beach in Gulf Shores after the Deepwater Horizon disaster. The statue’s unveiling — which sits right in front of an unfinished Jimmy Buffett mural — came before the “Jimmy Buffett Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience” exhibit, which opens Saturday, Sept. 12 at the Maritime Museum. Related festivities include live music at the museum and a Mac McAnally concert the night of Friday, Sept. 11 at the Mobile Saenger Theatre. The opening also coincides with the inaugural MobTown Mural Festival. Mobile Mayor Spiro Cheriogotis and National Maritime Museum of the Gulf Executive Director Karen Poth said that the exhibition is a blockbuster in the making. Reporting by Lawrence Specker Rea...
